What is a Selective High School?
- Selective Schools are government high schools operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training
- They have accepted their students based upon their academin merit
- There are currently 17 full selective schools, 23 partially selective schools, 4 agricultural high schools and 1 virtual selective school provision
- The aim of a selective school is to provide a scholastically challenging environment for more academically able students
Selective High Schools in NSW
- In 1988 approximately 15,000 Year 6 students applied for 2451 places at a selective school. In 2002, there were 15,434 applicants for 3374 places in Year 7 in selective schools
- Out of this 51% were boys and 49% were girls
- For 2009 placement, 12,834 students sat for the test for 3,530 selective places
- In 2010 there currently 17 full selective high schools, 23 partially selective high schools, 4 agricultural schools and 1 virtual selective class provision offering selective placement for Year 7 entry
